The King Township Public Library
provides children’s programming to
our community that encourages both
reading and literacy. Our library
system holds a substantial collection
of materials that can enhance the
learning experience that is fostered in
all of our children’s programmes. You
can be sure that there are always
books to be found on display in
support of the event’s theme. Our
library programmes are designed
specifically to support the process of
life-long learning and encourage
associated literacy skills through the
use of the library’s resources.
An excellent example is our Every
Child Ready to Read (ECRR) component present in all of our early
literacy programmes. The ECRR
early literacy initiative is an innovative,
research-based approach to
developing six distinct pre-reading
skills that children must know in order
to learn to read. Studies show that
children who have been read on a
regular basis in the first five years of
life have a huge advantage in the
area of language development. The
initiative is used in library systems
across North America and was developed
by the American Library Association
(ALA) to educate parents and
caregivers and facilitate the sharing of
books and activities that help develop
each of the six skills necessary for
reading success.
Through our programming, we will
help parents and caregivers foster
these skills through the love of reading!
The King Township Public Library
recently had the opportunity to participate
in a survey put out by the
Federation of Ontario Public Libraries
(FOPL). This survey was conducted
by FOPL to assist Ontario’s Minister
of Culture in providing information on
public libraries’ literacy programmes.
Our libraries performed extremely
well in comparison to the 204 library
boards that participated. The King
Township Public Libraries offered
over 350 literacy programmes with
3400 participants, in the 2009
programming year! For more information
