Nobleton's Blacksmith Shop
In the 1870's and until the 1960's, one of the
most important businesses in Nobleton was the
Blacksmith's shop. In the earlier days of the
community, the blacksmith shop provided very
essential services for the town. First it met the
principal need of the only transportation system
available in those days, namely horse drawn
vehicles. In that shop they manufactured and
fitted shoes for the area horses. The business
also manufactured most of the hardware
required by the residents, including hand made
nails, door hinges, iron fittings for horse carts
and wagons, and other items for farm and home.
It was located on what is now the east side of
Highway # 27 at a "T" intersection with westbound
Bolton Road. In the late 1960's this part
of Nobleton was completely rebuilt. The blacksmith
shop was removed and King Road was redirected
to enter directly into Bolton Road from
the east. The name "Bolton Road" was dropped
and the whole thoroughfare became King Road.
This meant King Road now extended west from
Yonge Street, not just to Bolton, but in fact,
through what is now Peel Region to Terra Cotta.
The shop of the local blacksmith was not
demolished. Instead it was re-located to Black
Creek Pioneer Village. The "Now" photo (right)
shows that building at its new location. If you
have a old picture that would make a good "Then" photo, please contact us by e-mail -
