Back to school with READING BUDDIES!

Fall has arrived and it’s back to school! The start of a new school year brings excitement, learning, homework and routines. Why not make the library a part of your family’s schedule? We are offering literacy based programming that has been implemented to help introduce and foster your child’s reading. In addition to our regular programming of Born to Read, Pre-school Story Hour and Mother Daughter Book Clubs, there is Reading Buddies! A wonderful program tailored to help children practice their reading.

Reading Buddies is for children that are not reading at their level and need extra help. Children ages 6 and older will be matched with volunteers, ages 14 and up, once a week for a minimum of 10 weeks. The children will be given an hour of oneon- one reading time. In addition to reading there are also literacy based games and activities to be enjoyed. Our dedicated volunteers are usually high school and university students. High school students may use this time towards their community service hours and university students interested in becoming teachers gain valuable experience. Adult volunteers are more
than welcome! Our Reading Buddy volunteers were recently awarded the Youth Award of Merit given by King Township – Congratulations!

The fall session of Reading Buddies is set to start at the end of September. The winter session will begin in early February of 2008. This program will be available at the Schomberg, Nobleton and King City Libraries. If you are interested in enrolling your child or becoming a
volunteer for the fall or winter sessions, please pick up an application at the library or go online to the library’s website www.king-library.on.ca

The LOST WORLDS SUMMER READING CLUB was a resounding success! Thank you to TD Summer Reading Program for providing the materials for this super event! We have had
such a terrific turnout for the Lost Worlds Summer Reading Club this year! All the schools in King Township were visited and the Children’s Librarian spoke with children from
Kindergarten to Grade 5. As a result King Township Public Library had 500 children join the Summer Reading Club! 2300 books have been read and 504 children came to our
programs (the majority of children came from week to week). We have offered 8 weekly club meetings all with different themes at each of our four branches; Ansnorveldt, King City, Nobleton and Schomberg Libraries. Themes have included; dinosaurs, Egyptians, Vikings, Aztec's, Pirates, Under the Sea, Ancient Greece and Rome, and Medieval Times. The club
meetings that the children attended consisted of games, activities and theme based crafts. The children have made giant castles, treasure boxes, Aztec Coins, Fossils, Wool Octopi, Shields, Masks, and Egyptian Papyrus paper.

Upon registration members received free stickers, a Lost Worlds magazine and a poster. The children fill in a log book and receive a ballot for every book they read, which
are then entered into bi-weekly draws and a grand prize at the end of the summer.

We received some wonderful help from summer students who helped make this program the success it is! We would like to take this opportunity and thank Katelyn Bernath, Lisa Ohberg and Sinead Owens. These ladies put forth a tremendous amount of work and dedication. Thank you! The King Township Public Library would also like to thank the TD Bank Managers Lela Bojovic and Robert McGregor, for attending our launch of the Summer Reading Club!
