The Kettleby Women’s Institute began on January 23, 1911, when 21 women gathered at the Sons of Temperance Hall in Kettleby. Eighteen became members and by 1956,the number of members had increased to 60. Gradually the numbers declined and the branch was disbanded on its 70th anniversary.

Over the years, Kettleby WI taught homemaking skills, baking, quilting and needlework to members and others, supported community activities, helped 4-H clubs, provided prizes for children at fairs and worked with the Red cross during two world wars. During WW2, the branch adopted a branch in England and an English family and sent them clothing and other items.

The Sons of Temperance Hall was moved to Black Creek Pioneer Village, Toronto and now houses the Printing Shop and the Weaver’s Shop. In an interesting example of connecting threads, part of the proceeds, raised by York Centre District during the Fall Festival last year, were donated to help repair the printing press in the shop.
